Earlier today, Welsh Government launched the ‘Renewable Energy Sector Deal for Wales‘. The new Sector Deal brings together all parts of the renewables sector and aims to support the skills, supply chains and infrastructure needed to meet Wales’ 2035 target of generating the equivalent of 100% of its electricity consumption from renewable sources.
The Deal also emphasises the importance of ensuring that Welsh communities benefit directly from renewable energy projects. It highlights examples such as the Morlais tidal energy project on Anglesey, showing how long‑term partnership working can turn Wales’ natural resources into local economic opportunities.
Tom Hill, Programme Manager at Marine Energy Wales, said:
“This sector deal reflects the significant collaboration that has taken place between Welsh Government and industry over the past year. Bringing together a wide range of voices from across the renewable energy sector has helped shape a shared vision for how Wales can accelerate clean energy deployment while maximising the economic opportunities for Welsh businesses and communities. It demonstrates what can be achieved when government and industry work together with a clear and ambitious purpose.”
In her Written Statement, Rebecca Evans MS, Cabinet Secretary for the Economy, Energy and Planning, said:
“The Welsh Government is committed to creating jobs and driving sustainable, green growth to make families in Wales more prosperous and to help with the cost of living. I am today launching our Renewable Energy Sector Deal for Wales, which will not only help to deliver that growth but will also strengthen our future energy security.
Meeting our ambition to generate the equivalent of 100% of annual electricity consumption from renewable sources by 2035, including progress towards delivering at least 1.5 gigawatts of locally owned renewable energy capacity by 2035, is central to this Sector Deal. Equally important is our commitment to ensuring that the economic, environmental and social benefits of renewable energy deployment are retained in Wales through strengthened supply chains, new skills pathways, high‑quality jobs and enhanced opportunities for shared ownership and community benefit programmes.”
