DP Energy and Floating Power Plant have announced the establishment of a joint venture to evaluate and, dependent on the outcomes of that work, develop, two sites, one in Scotland the other in Wales. The site(s) could be up and running by 2020.
DP Energy is a leading global developer in renewable energy projects which are both sustainable and environmentally benign. In a comment on the expanded partnership with Floating Power Plant, Simon De Pietro, CEO DP Energy said: ’Floating offshore wind will be a significant part of the renewable energy market, exploiting new areas of resource while reducing the cost of deployment, operation and maintenance and thus the cost of the energy generated. DP Energy will pursue opportunities in this area across all its areas of operation. There are a number of promising floating wind technologies seeking to address distinct environmental and engineering challenges. For sites with a significant wave regime DP Energy believes Floating Power Plant provides one of the most promising hybrid technologies in the sector for extracting both wind and wave energy and we have chosen to partner with them on two pilot demonstration projects in the UK leading to potential commercial project developments, each with a capacity of around 200MW.’
The new project companies are Dyfed and Katanes Floating Energy Ltd, developing sites in south Wales and north Scotland respectively. ’This is a breakthrough for us,’ said Ander Køhler, CEO Floating Power Plant. ’DP Energy is a highly valued strategic partner. For us to now be able to announce that we have joined forces with DP Energy in development of these two sites with our wind and wave technology is an important milestone. In 2015 we also established Floating Power Plant Ltd, with offices in Scotland, to lead our contribution to these developments as well as building links to the local supply chain.’ Established in 2004, Floating Power Plant is a Danish clean-tech company that has designed, developed and patented the P80 technology platform, providing a 5-8MW floating wind turbine combined with a 2-3,6MW wave device.
