Nova Innovation

Nova Innovation is one of the world’s leading tidal energy companies. They are passionate about generating clean, predictable and sustainable electricity from the natural ebb and flow of the tide.

Drawing on lessons from the wind industry, Nova believe the way to achieve this is by demonstrating commercial devices at a small scale, before scaling up as the technology matures.

Nova deployed the world’s first offshore tidal array in 2016 in Bluemull Sound, Shetland and are continuing to drive the industry forward.

About Nova’s technology

Nova’s motto is start small, think big, move fast. The small size of Nova’s M100 turbines enable them to:

  • Reduce engineering and financial risk
  • Accumulate operating hours
  • Prove reliability and safety
  • Accelerate technology evolution
  • Maximise the use of local supply chain and local benefits

Ultimately, Nova believe this is the way to bring down the lifetime cost of tidal energy.

Nova’s Enlli Tidal Project

In 2017, Nova was awarded an Agreement for Lease from The Crown Estate for the Enlli Tidal project, off the tip of the Llŷn Peninsula in north Wales.

The Agreement for Lease has enabled Nova to commence site investigations for the necessary consents, including undertaking an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project.

Nova is working in partnership with a community energy group, YnNi Llŷn, to develop the project. Nova and YnNi Llŷn have a shared vision to deliver locally generated renewable electricity that will create local benefits and address fuel poverty. Nova is also working with the Bardsey Island Trust and island residents to explore the possible benefits of the project.
